Magnesium anode rods protect water heater tanks through the electrochemical principle of sacrificial anode protection. Since magnesium is more reactive than iron (the tank material), it forms a galvanic cell system in water. Magnesium preferentially corrodes and releases electrons, thus preventing oxidation and corrosion of the steel tank. When the porcelain enamel coating inside the tank is damaged, the magnesium rod releases current to form a polarized film, repairing the damaged area. By sacrificing itself, the magnesium rod reduces scale buildup and maintains heating efficiency. If not replaced for an extended period, accumulated scale will cause the water to take longer to heat up, using more energy.
